What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, commonly known as a boob job, employs saline or silicone filled implants to give women firmer, fuller, well-proportioned breasts. It is one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States. Breast implant surgery requires placing implants under the breast or partially under the chest muscle while minimizing the appearance and visibility of surgical scars. Breast augmentation and implant surgery can make a woman more confident in her appearance.

Are You A Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

You are a candidate if you are seeking to add volume to your breasts, correct asymmetry or improve upper pole breast fullness and shape.  Some patients may seek the enlargement of both breasts, and others may seek the correction of asymmetric breasts. After childbearing, some patients have decreased breast tissue and may desire a 'Mommy Makeover", which in addition to breast implants, includes belly surgery to tighten and flatten the tissue of the abdomen that can lose elasticity after pregnancy.

Saline And Silicone Gel Breast Implants

Breast implants are silicone elastomer shells filled with either salt water (saline) or silicone gel. While both are approved by the FDA, silicone gel implants can offer a more natural-feeling result. Buinewicz Plastic Surgery provides Allergan®, Mentor®, and Sientra® breast implants. The type of implant will be selected during the consultation depending on patient’s expectations, body habitus and examination.

It is important to remember that breast implants, like any other implant, are not permanent devices and will require other surgicla procedures such as  replacement, revision or removal at some point in time. No surgical device lasts forever. There are known risks and complications that can occur with breast augmentation that are important to understand and will be discussed at your consultation.  Complication risks increase over the lifetime of the implant.  These complications can require additional procedures to correct. Breast implants have also been associated with rare forms of cancers and lymphomas. Also, be aware that some patients do develop systemic illness from their implants (Breast Implant Illness Syndrome). The pros and cons of breast augmentation will be discussed at your consultation.

Breast Augmentation Surgery - Incision Techniques

The entire surgical procedure lasts between one and two hours. General anesthesia is typically administered. Pain blocks adminisitered by an anesthesiologist significantly decrease the amount of ppostoperative discomfort. The incisions may be located in one of several inconspicuous places: the armpit, the crease beneath the breast, or around the areola. Inframammary crease incisions are the most common incision chosen.  During surgery, the implants are either placed beneath the breast tissue or the muscle of the chest wall.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Recovery varies depending on the patient and the specifics of the procedure, but generally, most patients feel tired and sore for a day or two following the surgery. Many patients feel able to return to work within a  week.

What Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

Unless the surgery is performed for reconstruction purposes associated with breast cancer, breast augmentation is considered a cosmetic procedure, and the costs are not covered by medical insurance.

Dr. Buinewicz accepts cash, personal checks, and credit cards and offers financing to make breast augmentation more affordable for his patients.
