Botox® vs. Fillers: Which Is Right for Me?

Injectables and dermal fillers are cosmetic products that are designed for facial rejuvenation. They allow you to look younger without an invasive surgical procedure, and there is no downtime involved in the treatment. The procedure takes less than an hour to complete, and the results can be seen immediately.

Botox in Bucks County, PA, and Hunterdon County, NJWhen deciding between Botox® and dermal fillers, one option is not better than the other because they are not interchangeable. Here is the basic difference. Each has a different function and is meant to treat different areas of the face. Botox® relaxes muscle movements that contract to produce wrinkles. Fillers on the other hand replace volume loss by occupying the space where the wrinkle has formed.

About Botox®

Botox® is a muscle relaxer made from bacteria. Botox® is not used for fine lines caused by collagen breakdown. Botox® helps relax the muscles that deepen wrinkles. It is best used in the upper part of the face, decreasing wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. This is a very effective treatment for crow’s feet, horizontal worry lines on the forehead and vertical frown lines between the eyebrows.

The results of a Botox® injection will typically last three to four months. Then you’ll need to undergo additional treatments if you want to maintain your results.

About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used to add volume to the deep wrinkles or volume-depleted areas of the face, like the cheeks. Fillers like Juvederm® and Restylane® can help alleviate that sunken appearance that comes with age. They help hydrate the skin. Unlike Botox®, dermal fillers have no muscle relaxing effect. Fillers are best used in the lower part of the face, like the cheeks, the nasal-labial folds and around the mouth. Fillers can also be injected into the lips to add fullness.

You will see immediate results with some improvement over time. The results can last up to a year or two, depending on the particular filler that is being used. When the effects wear off, you will need to continue with maintenance treatments.
