What is Spider Vein Treatment?

The gold standard for spider vein treatment is sclerotherapy from Buinewicz Plastic Surgery. Sclerotherapy is an advanced, effective and minimally invasive treatment for spider veins that eliminates spider veins by making them disappear. Sclerotherapy is the injection of a special chemical, called a sclerosant, into an affected vein, ultimately causing it to collapse and simply disappear. Sclerotherapy is a simple in-office procedure that is the most common and effective treatment for spider veins. Spider veins are dilated blood vessels that form just under your skin and that result in red, blue, or purple clusters of veins visible on the skin’s surface. Some people describe them as looking like a road map, but besides the aesthetic issue of the appearance of these veins, other symptoms can arise which may include skin redness, itching, and a firm, tender, and warm vein. Some patients may experience pain and swelling as well. Spider veins can be caused by pregnancy, heredity, weight gain, and standing or sitting for long periods. These are the same factors that contribute to larger varicose veins.

What are the Benefits of Spider Vein Treatment?

Are you tired of hiding under layers of clothing because you are self-conscious about the appearance of spider veins? In most cases, sclerotherapy is the best option and the gold standard when it comes to eliminating spider veins. Once injected, the sclerosant irritates your vein wall and causes it to close off. Your body then automatically reroutes the blood to other nearby veins and the diseased vein turns to scar tissue that is reabsorbed over the next few weeks.

What is the Procedure for Spider Vein Treatment?

Most sclerotherapy sessions take less than an hour to perform and allow you to return to your daily routine afterward. After utilizing an ultrasound machine or a vein illumination light to precisely guide each sclerosant injection into your spider veins, we then use a very small needle to inject the sclerosant into the veins. After the injections are finished, a special cream is massaged into the treated area to increase the coverage of the sclerosant, improving its overall effect and soothing your legs. We recommend no heavy lifting of over 30 pounds and no heavy physical aerobic activities for 48 hours afterward, but lots of walking is recommended. Most patients return to their normal activities after 48 hours. Your precise number of treatments will vary depending upon your individual needs and the severity of your spider vein treatment needs. Many of your veins will disappear within several months of your first treatment and will continue to improve over time. If you are bothered by spider veins or have questions about your leg health, then schedule your consultation now with the spider vein experts at Buinewicz Plastic Surgery.
