What is the Fat Transfer and Injection Treatment?
The fat transfer and injections procedure, also called facial fat grafting, involves transplanting live fat cells from one area of your body and transplanting them to your face. The transplanted cells continue to live after they are transplanted and maintain their volume. Using careful techniques, the fat cells can be transplanted to nearly every area of the face, restoring its youthful appearance.
Fat grafting is often offered at the same time a person undergoes a facelift.
At your appointment, Dr. Buinewicz will discuss facial fat grafting as a standalone surgery or companion surgery to your facelift.
What are the Benefits of Fat Transfer and Injections?
Patients who have undergone facial fat grafting report having smoother skin. They also report having a more natural-looking profile. Here are a few of the other benefits of undergoing facial fat grafting.
- Improvement in the volume of the skin and the face.
- An increase in self-esteem and self-confidence.
Preparations for the Fat Transfer and Injections
Other than patients needing to be in good health, there is nothing that needs to be done in preparation for this procedure. The procedure is performed using a local anesthetic and can take one to two hours to complete. Dr. Buinewicz will mark the fat extraction sites and the areas where it will be injected. Using a fine-gauge needle, he then injects the extracted fat into the parts of the face where there is volume loss.
Where is the Fat Taken From?
The fat used for fat grafting can come from most places on the body, including the abdomen, hips, flank area and thighs. The fat is removed through a tiny incision, roughly the size of a pen tip that is made in an inconspicuous place.
Fat Transfer and Injection Recovery
There is very little risk for adverse reactions since you are using fat from your own body. The injection sites may be tender following the procedure, and any bruising and tenderness should diminish within a few days. You should refrain from touching your face immediately following your treatment.
