Just like every new mother is unique, every Mommy Makeover procedure at the PA and NJ area’s Buinewicz Plastic Surgery is individualized. Each patient has personal goals and a body shaped by experiences no one else has had.
That said, there are commonalities—between mothers and between Mommy Makeover procedures. Many women choose to have work done on their breasts, for example, or want to do something about their body, whether it is excess skin, stretched muscles, excess fat, or a combination of all three that can linger long after the baby has been born.
With that in mind, here is a look at some of the most common elements chosen to include in a Mommy Makeover.
Breasts
During pregnancy, the breasts become larger when the milk glands develop as they get ready to feed a newborn baby with milk. After the baby is born and breastfeeding stops—if it started at all—the breasts shrink again. In actuality, this fluctuation in size can cause the breasts to stay excessively large, reduce to smaller than they were before, appear asymmetrical, and sag due to stretched-out tissue.
Breast augmentation with implants, fat transfer, or both can restore size and shape to deflated breasts, and a breast lift can elevate the sagging breasts so that appear in a more fixed and perky position. These two strategies can also be combined into a dual lift and augmentation. Overly large breasts can be addressed with a breast reduction.
Body
Another area that swells, stretches, and shrinks again is the belly. On the inside, the uterus grows along with the baby, while on the outside, skin in the abdominal region must rapidly expand to accommodate the change. Unfortunately, skin—and especially older skin—does not always do a great job of contracting back to its taut form after being stretched out of shape by a fetus. The growing baby can also cause abdominal muscles to separate, and there are frequently stubborn fat cells that continue to create an unwelcome bulge.
All of these changes can be addressed with a full tummy tuck, which removes lax skin (and the stretch marks on it), repairs the muscles, and removes stubborn fat. Patients who only have some sagging below the belly button may opt for a mini tummy tuck that focuses on tissues below the navel and is not as dramatic of a surgery.
Fat
Speaking of excess fat, the large cells can be found all over the body—not just on the belly. From a double chin to a bulkier bottom to love handles on the sides to all of the above, fat cells may change body contours in ways a patients doesn’t want.
Liposuction is surgical fat removal, using a cannula to suction out fat cells from specific areas. Patients not interested in surgery can opt for nonsurgical options such as EMSCULPT NEO or fat-freezing CoolSculpting® to get more gradual results, but with less downtime required.
