Generally, the time between your consultation and your lip augmentation surgery will be somewhere between 1 and 6 weeks. The exact time between the two will depend on a few factors. One major factor is our practice availability, as Dr. Buinewicz needs to be available for your entire procedure. Additionally, some patients may need a few weeks to fully prepare for surgery, which may include discontinuing the use of certain vitamins, drugs and medications that can negatively interfere with treatment. On the other hand, lip augmentation via lip injections can often be performed the same day because very little preparation is needed.

How Much Does Lip Augmentation Cost?

The average cost of lip augmentation varies from one community to the other with some small variations. What Happens During Lip Augmentation?

Lip Injection Process

Prior to injection, we’ll clean and outline the lip area. A topical anesthetic is applied to numb the lips so the injections are comfortable. The fillers are precisely injected in small amounts into specific areas of the lips using a very fine needle. Then the lips will be gently massaged to evenly distribute the filler. Some results are visible immediately, giving some idea of the outcome, although mild swelling will persist for a few days.

Lip Implant Surgery

Surgical lip implants involve small incisions made on the inside corners of the mouth or along the lip border. Custom silicone lip implants are inserted through the incisions and positioned in a pocket created within the lip structure. The implants are placed and secured internally with dissolvable sutures, then incisions are closed. The implants have an immediate augmenting effect that remains permanent.

Lip Augmentation via Lip Injections

Injectable dermal fillers are a quick and effective lip augmentation solution that does not require surgery. They can also remove fine lines and deep wrinkles that surround the lips. Patients love dermal lip injections because they require no anesthesia, incisions or sedation. We begin treatment with a topical numbing agent that minimizes the discomfort associated with injections. Then, the dermal filler product will be injected into the lips, requiring only a few minutes to administer. The best part is that the results last for six to nine months. We may recommend one of the following dermal fillers for your lip augmentation treatment:

Lip Augmentation via Lip Implants

Lip implants are solid, silicone-based devices surgically inserted into the lips through small incisions to augment volume. Based on a patient’s desired look, implants customized to size and shape are chosen and precisely positioned within the lip structure. The implants permanently sit inside the lips to provide fullness, definition and symmetry. The implants are designed to feel soft and look natural. The minimally invasive procedure is done under local anesthesia and takes 1-2 hours. Mild swelling and bruising occur initially but improve quickly. Compared to temporary fillers, implants do not require repeat treatments to maintain results. However, as a surgical procedure, the recovery period is longer.

Which is Better, Lip Filler or Lip Implants?

Both lip fillers and implants have pros and cons. In general, fillers offer a temporary, non-surgical lip augmentation option while implants provide more dramatic, permanent enhancement surgically. Fillers are a quick, in-office treatment with minimal downtime. Effects last 6-12 months before requiring repeat injections to maintain plumpness. They are ideal for those wanting subtle lip enhancement or who are not ready for surgery. Implants involve a surgical procedure with incisions and a recovery period. However, properly placed implants provide permanent, predictable lip fullness. This may be preferred by those seeking very plump lips or a permanent solution. The optimal choice depends on each patient’s specific cosmetic goals, tolerance for surgery, and desired level and longevity of lip augmentation.

How Long Does Lip Augmentation Last?

Lip implants provide long-term surgical enhancement while injectable fillers give short-term nonsurgical augmentation that requires re-treatment every 6-12 months. Lip implants are designed to remain in place indefinitely, though occasional replacement may be needed after 5-10 years. Injectable fillers offer temporary lip plumping for 6-12 months before the filler is naturally absorbed. Afterwards, repeat injections are required to maintain the augmentation.

How is Long Lip Augmentation Recovery?

Lip augmentation via lip injections requires little to no recovery process. You’ll experience bruising and swelling in the lips, but these symptoms will resolve within a few days of treatment and you’ll be able to resume all normal activities. Lip augmentation via lip implants is a longer recovery process that typically looks like this:

Week 1

The first week after lip implant surgery focuses on incision care, swelling control, and pain management. Cold compresses and head elevation are used to minimize bruising and swelling. Only soft foods that require no chewing should be consumed initially. Oral hygiene is critical during early healing stages. Talking and facial expressions should be limited. Pain medication can help to manage discomfort.

Weeks 2-4

Swelling and bruising continue to improve. Sutures dissolve and incisions heal. The lips remain numb. Daily activities can be resumed after 2 weeks but no heavy lifting or pressure on the lips. No kissing, smoking or mouthwash is advised to avoid disrupting the implants while they integrate. Soft foods are encouraged. Swelling gradually decreases but some lumpiness in lips may persist.

Weeks 4-8

Most swelling resolves by 6 weeks but the lips may remain mildly tender and numb. Patients can ease back into work after 4-6 weeks if the job is not strenuous. At 8 weeks, the implants are integrated and the sensation in the lips should return to normal. Light physical activity can resume but vigorous exercise should wait 2-3 months.

3 Months and Beyond

By 3 months, most patients are healed enough to resume all regular activities and light exercise. The implants have fully integrated internally. Swelling and numbness have resolved. Patients can assess if any touch-ups are needed once complete healing has occurred.
